Thrikarthika, or Trikartika, is the festival of lights celebrated in Kerala.Mainly this festival is celebrated in the full moon day.On this day all the houses, streets and temples are well lit with traditional oil lamps and special prayers and puja are offers to the Goddess Bhagavati.These special prayers and puja are offers in the evening and attended mostly by women.
It is the birthday of Lord Subramonya and the celebration is held in the Subramonya temples.On Thrikarthika day after sunset several lights will be lit in small earthen vessels – chirathu in temples and houses.
