This festival is celebrated for the well being of the first born in the family, whether boy or girl. It is one of the most celebrated festivals in Orissa. This festival is celebrated in honour of Sati Debi.
On this day Women perform Sati Debi puja for health and wellbeing of their children.On this day day People given new clothes and is made to sit on a wooden pedestal (Pidha) to new born baby .The mother or any other elderly lady wishes him /her long-life and good health by praying Sasthi Debi.
On this day a special recipe are prepared called ‘enduri is and offered to the deity.In Bhubaneswar temple Laingaraj , Prathamashtami is a jubilant occasion.In this temple, the deity is taken for procession in a palanquin to ‘Papanasini, a lake or pond made especially for ritual bath, at the temple. This procession attracts thousands of devotees in this temple.
