Makara Sankranti is famous occasions for the Hindus, and it is celebrated in almost all over India and is a harvest festival.On this occasions most of the people take a dip in places like Ganga Sagar & Prayag and pray to Lord Sun.It is a celebration of spring on the occasion of the ‘ascent’ of the sun to the north (Uttarayana).
On the day of Makara Sankranti the sun is enter into the Makara rashi (Capricorn) on its celestial path.Sun for the Hindus stands for Pratyaksha-Brahman – the manifest God, who symbolizes, the one, non-dual, self-effulgent, glorious divinity blessing one & all tirelessly.From Uttarayana starts the ‘day’ of Devatas, while dakshinayana is said to be the ‘night’ of devatas, so most of the auspicious things are done during this time. It is the time the farmers bring home their harvest.
In state of India Like Maharashtra, Karnataka as well as parts of Andhra, Day of Makara Sankranti is a day of good will and friendship.The festival starts with bathing in the ponds or rivers and offering water to the Sun God (Surya) and giving alms to the poor.
On this festival people exchange pieces of sugar-cane,pieces of dry coconut, molasses, peanuts and fried gram as a symbol of the need to be generous and kind to everyone.
The day is known by various names and a variety of traditions are witnessed as one explores the festival in different states.
