About Festival
Karthigai Deepam Festival or the festival of lights is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of November-December.It is just like a Diwali festival.On this day every house is illuminated with a large number of flat earthen lamps and there is great rejoicing, children using crackers and lighting lamps. Karthigai Deepam Festival is celebrated for ten days in Thiruvannamalai which ends on Karthigai Pournami day.
Celebration of Festival
Karthigai Deepam festival started with the hoisting of the flag and continues for nine days. First day is Uttradam and ending with Bharani Deepam in five agantams in Arunachaleswarar’s sannithi.The evening of 10 th day the Pancha Murthis are brought to the Katchi Mandapam.
In some areas of Tamil Nadu like Vaishnavites , use a type of light prepared by themselves to illuminate their homes. This is called Pori Vaanam and it is made of a stick called Kavattaik-kambu with cloth, cloth rope, saw-dust, konkani resin and Maruthankai being the fruit of Maruda trees.
At Pradosha time (evening) on Karthigai Deepam festival, the Pancha Murthis (five deities of Tiruvannamalai temple) will be brought to the Katchi Mandapam. The idol of Arunachaleswarar is brought to the place along with five lamps.
