About Festival
Ganga Dussehra or Ganga Dasara is a 10-day festival and dedicated to Goddess Ganga (Ganga River).10 days of this month are devoted to the worship of this holy river. Numerous ceremonies are organised on the occasion including pujas, prayers and other rituals. Ganga Dussehra is celebrated through out the India but special significance in Hindu community of Uttar Pradesh, Bengal ,Bihar where this river flows throw .It is mainly celebrated in holy places like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Varanasi, Prayag and Garh-Mukteswar.
History of the Ganga Dasara
According to Hindu mythology ‘Gangavataran‘ or the descent of the Ganga (Ganges), happened at this time. Ganga, the eldest daughter of Himavan and Mena and sister of Parvathi was married to the gods in heaven but ‘tapas’ of Bhagiratha Ganga brought down to earth.The source of the Ganga is at Gaumukh.
